Blog Swap and Hop: Leave FAB Plans for Your Sub

Welcome to Rachel from Sub Hub!
You can find my Blog Swap and Hop post at Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas!

Today is the day! I am not Molly. I am Rachel from Sub Hub and am guest posting on Lessons with Laughter today in celebration of the Top Teachers' Blog Swap and Hop. At the end of this post, you will find a list of incredible blogs also participating in the swap. As you can see from the name of my blog, I am a substitute teacher. No, it was not my life's ambition to become a substitute teacher, but it is where life has landed me for the moment, so I am embracing the profession and making it the best I possibly can. On my blog I share tips, strategies, activities, and sub plans. Today, I will be sharing with you some tips for leaving sub plans that work.

I don't care who you are, how healthy you are, or how good your intentions are. It happens to every teacher. There comes a time when you have to miss school for one reason or another. And you have to write the *cue dramatic music here* dreaded sub plans!

But why are they so dreaded? Well, my guess is that 1) You know your routine, methods, strategies, curriculum, etc. Someone else doesn't. And 2) Many times you have no idea who that sub will be walking through the door. I am the first to admit that the substitute teaching profession needs major overhauling. There are quite a few unqualified, uncaring individuals who are subs. I have met some myself. Sometimes it can be like scene out of a horror movie. You just never know what state your room and students will be in when you return.

You need to write those dreaded sub plans so that they will be something meaningful for the students (preferably moving along your scope and sequence so as not to waste precious teaching time), while at the same time running interference to do damage control in case of an unqualified sub. As a sub for the last five years, I have seen a lot of sub plans. I have seen some things that work and plenty that don't. I can tell you if I weren't a certified teacher, those times that the plans didn't work could have been disastrous. And let's face it, a small number of subs are actually certified.

My best tip to writing sub plans that work? Make them FAB! What exactly are FAB plans? They are easy to FOLLOW. They are APPROPRIATE. They include BONUS activities to fill time.

Easy to FOLLOW. Remember, you have someone in your classroom who doesn't know you, your routines, or your students. The more details you can give, and the more clearly written the instructions are, the better chance a sub has of successfully following those plans. And make sure all materials and supplies that a sub would need for the day are handy. I have a free Sub Prep Checklist to make sure you don't forget anything.

APPROPRIATE. What does that mean? Well, of course, they must be at the correct level for your students. If you leave work that is too easy or too challenging, the students will most likely become a behavior problem for the sub. Also appropriate are lessons with a purpose. Know the objective for all lessons left, whether that objective is practicing a standard or curriculum requirement or just focusing on other skills such as critical thinking. That means to not leave just worksheet after worksheet of busy work. And finally, think about what would be practical for a sub to carry out. I would tend to avoid teaching new material, activities you know the students hate or struggle with, and group activities. In my experience, one type of lesson that works really well is a read-aloud followed by an activity practicing a reading or language arts skill. If you have a true emergency and don't have time at all to write lesson plans, you can check out my free ones available for grades K-5.

Include BONUS Activities. I know it has happened to you. Lessons you thought were going to take hours, the students sped through in 30 minutes. When you are there, it's no big deal. You just go on to the next thing. But a sub may not know what that next thing is. So make sure you leave a few bonus activities for those "just-in-case" times. Those can also be fun things that the students love. In that case, the sub can even use those as classroom management rewards.

While, no sub plans are completely foolproof, if you make them FAB, you will reduce the likelihood of chaos and destruction. And, yes, I am quite melodramatic. Ha!

Summer Notebook & Notepads Galore!

I haven't been out of school for a full week yet, and already I have tons of ideas for next year! With my master's program, conferences, book studies, and great ideas from all you wonderful bloggers, I needed a place to store all of my thoughts and ideas of things I want to do in my classroom next year!

Enter. . . my new Erin Condren notebook!
Title106949396
I LOVE all of Erin Condren's colorful goodies, so of course I was so excited to see that she came out with notebooks! And I knew this would be a perfect place to keep all my thoughts organized! You can't get much more fun and colorful! I even got to personalize my notebook with all my favorite things! Just looking at it makes me happy!

I started off with a Table of Contents, so I could quickly find what I am looking for!
I listed the page number first, followed by the topic.
Title578199728

On each of my "note" pages I put the topic at the top, and then my notes on the lines below.
I tried to first identify what each topic is, followed by uses in the classroom and helpful links or resources and examples. I'm just getting started, so I'm sure by the end of summer my note pages and table of contents will be full of tons of wonderful information to take back to my classroom!

Here's some of what I have so far:

Also, I have to share this FABULOUS find from Barnes & Nobel!
I was there this weekend, and right by the door when I walked in I saw this:

Title28672807

A set with magnetic notepads for each month, 12 pads of page markers, and 3 sets of sticky notes!
And did you see the price?!?!
It was only $12.98!!
Of course I had to buy two of them!
I would've bought the whole pile, but my husband stepped in after the 2nd one. :)
Figured it would be a perfect "just for fun" gift for one of my best friends, who also happens to be a teacher!

How are you keeping track of all the fabulous ideas you are getting this summer?

Hope you all had a fabulous Monday!!

The Author Behind The Recess Queen

Today I met an amazing author at the annual Reading/Language Arts Conference for my master's program!!

Alexis O'Neill has written four wonderful stories, two of which are classroom favorites!! She was so sweet and full of energy! She had us singing and acting out her stories, which was tons of fun to do and watch!
Title393468249

This is a GREAT book about bullying where a new kid stands up to a bully by asking her to play! It also happens to be one of my students' favorite read alouds! I can't wait to tell them I met the author!!

One of my favorite parts of the book:

Mean Jean was Recess Queen
and nobody said any different.
Nobody swung until Mean Jean swung.
Nobody kicked until Mean Jean kicked.
Nobody bounced until Mean Jean bounced.
If kids ever crossed her, she'd push 'em and smoosh 'em
lollapaloosh 'em, hammer 'em, slammer 'em
kitz and kajammer 'em.
Until a new kid came to school!

Isn't her writing wonderful?!

And as she said, she didn't want to just "tell" that Jean was mean, she wanted to "show" it! Great example for students when they are working on their own writing! Going from just saying, "Jean was mean," to showing it with lots of great details!

  Estela's Swap

This is another sweet story about a girl who tries to sell her music box at a swap meet in order to earn money for Ballet Folklorico lessons. It is a great lesson on selflessness and generosity!!

The next two books were new to me! One of them I bought today, and the other one they didn't have so I ordered it online!

Loud Emily is a fun story about a girl who was loud since the day she was born and her quest to find somewhere she fits in! Another great story, which many students I'm sure can relate to! :)

This is the book that wasn't available today, so I ordered it online! It is a book about friendship and the divide that sometimes occurs when a new kid joins the class! Again, another great book that all kids can relate to! This one is perfect to follow The Recess Queen because it focuses on boy characters, whereas the other story featured two main girls. Also, the illustrator included pictures of the characters from The Recess Queen! So fun!

I LOVE children's books and am always excited to add new ones to my collection for read alouds!!

Monday Made It & Really Good Stuff Finalist!!

I am linking up with my sweet friend Tara from 4th Grade Frolics for her Monday Made It!!

I am constantly losing my keys at school! I don't have one set place to put them, so they always wind up everywhere! On my desk, on the counter, in my purse, on the back table... you get the picture! All year I have been wanting to designate a specific spot to hang my keys, and now, with 2 1/2 days of school left, I finally have it!

Title377936978

There is a spot right next to my door that is the perfect place!
To create my key hook I used a white letter I bought from Michaels.
(I forgot to take a "before" picture, but just picture the M white and without glitter!)
Then I covered it with Modge Podge and sprinkled Martha Stewart glitter on top.

I used the pink on the bottom, 4th over from the right!
I love, love, LOVE glitter and this set is amazing! I love all the bright colors!

End of the Year Gifts & a Freebie

Only ** 4 ** more days until we are out for the summer!!
I am so excited to have more time for my master's program and to do a bunch of crafty things, but I am going to miss my kiddos so much!! My class this year was amazing and I am really gonna miss their sweet, smiling faces and positive energy!

Of course, I still have tons to do before our last day next Wednesday!
Including end of the year gifts!

Last year was a lot different because our school closed down at the end of the year. It was very emotional because we had to say goodbye to all our students and our wonderful staff, and our kiddos had to say goodbye to all of their teachers and friends. A few of them stayed together at new schools, but many went off to different schools all over the city. I wanted to make them something extra special to remember their last year there as well as all of our fun memories together!

Title839160757

I got wooden picture frames at Michaels and I painted them different colors and used puffy paint and glitter glue to write on them. I put a class picture from our field trip to the Wild Animal Park in each frame.

I made the books for them with a collection of things that we had done throughout the year that I had saved. I took pictures of all of my kiddos "jumping" and they turned out great!! I love how they all put their personalities into their photos! Each book was titled, "Jumping through a wonderful year!"

Title533583614
I got the sand buckets at Michael's. They were 99¢, and I used a 20% off your total purchase coupon.
(I was just at Party City today and they have very similar buckets for 99¢ as well!)
Then I typed up a "Survival Kit for Life" using miscellaneous items. There are lots of great ideas online, and I just picked and chose which ones I liked best and make up a couple of my own to fit my needs and what I knew I could find!
I put all the items in a cellophane bag and tied the top with a ribbon. Then I backed the words on cardstock paper and put everything in the buckets!

Title884908069

I added a fun border for these tags, which you can get as a freebie at my tpt store!
Enjoy!

Starburst Goodies & Last Day of Giveaway!

As promised, here are some more pics from the starburst goodies that my class made for our 8th graders!

On Wednesday we had our farewell assembly for our 8th graders who will be graduating next week. Each class makes a small gift for each student and does a small presentation for them. For our gift, I bought cellophane bags and 2 huge bags of starburst. Then my kiddos put the starburst in a bag, traced and cut out the star, and wrote our sweet little note on it. Then they punched a hole in the top of the star and tied it to their bag! I had a couple students who were experts at the curling, so they helped with curling all the ribbon!

For our presentation, we decided to give the 8th graders some "star" advice...
4 students held up the letter posters they made, while 4 other students read the advice they wrote as a class for each letter!

Colorful Toolbox Organizer!

Title695593601

Today I am linking up with Tara from 4th Grade Frolics for her first Monday Made It linky party!

After seeing one of her previous posts where she gave a toolbox a makeover, I decided I was in desperate need of a similar organization system!

So, off to Home Depot I went to pick out an organizer!
I knew I wanted to spray paint it white, so I got this grey one because I figured it would be easier to cover up than the navy blue one (which was the only other choice)!
Title520665325

I sprayed it with a plastic primer first, and then a couple coats of white spray paint.
While the paint was drying I cut out scrapbook paper and printed the labels, which were made by Rebecca at Create, Teach, Share. She is the original inspiration behind the toolbox makeover! I attached the labels to the scrapbook paper with a removable adhesive and then I put the paper into the drawers, which I attached with a small piece of tape on the top and bottom.

After the paint was dry (well, pretty dry) I brought it inside and put in the drawers!.

Title518856546

Title915137621

All of the colors make me SO happy!
Title140078591

It definitely brightens up the counter behind my desk!
Title423253676

I am SO happy with how it turned out! I made it Thursday night and brought it to school on Friday and my kiddos thought it was the coolest thing ever!

Too bad it's only for me! :)
